ABOUT ME

(and my art work)

Throughout the MYP course in grades 9 and 10, I have always chosen Art as one of the Art subject choices. This is because I have an interest in this area since I find it really interesting and fun to work on art pieces, during class time or even during free time. As a result, a variety of art pieces are created during the course, in which throughout the course, I have been given many opportunities to work as well as engage with many different media. For instance, oil paint, watercolour, etc.

Furthermore, I have developed my artistic skills as the course provides me to complete inquiries of different studies that teach different techniques and also involves a lot of practice.

WATERCOLOUR ART WORK

Watercolour has been one of my most favourite media of art. This is because it is very easy to work with, as there the process of cleaning, changing the colours are not that complex, just dip and swirl in the water and it is good to go.

MIXED MEDIA

Mixed media was also very fun to work with. This is due to the fact that I get to actually work with more than one medium which makes it really interesting and fun to just play around with different mediums and material. For example, using different papers and pencils/pen to create the art piece.

CELL PAINTINGS AND ARTWORK

The cell painting as well as development of exploration were made from the actual cells of the plant/flowers that I took to the lab and use microscope to view the cells of each different types of leaves and flowers. Different types of leaves/flowers suggest different types of cell as well.

EYE DRAWINGS FROM PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCE

From the visual art course, primary as well as secondary drawings were created. This includes, eyes, hands as well as noses.

About the piece

These drawings are of my attempt of drawing realistic eyes using different mediums such as graphite, charcoal and pens. The fourth eye drawing is only graphite and had the best control when drawing the eye and because the lines were sharp there could be more details on the skin and eyelashes, however the values from just graphite alone are not very dark and resulted in a piece that had a small range of tonal value. The second was created using graphite and charcoal which allowed for the issue of a small range of value to be fixed due to the wide range of value charcoal has and resulted in a piece where highlights could stand out and create better depth. The third eye drawing was also made using a mixed media combination of graphite and pen this allowed for the most amount of control when drawing and line were very intricate however the pen had the smallest range of value resulting in a flat piece. Finally the first eye drawing is a mix of all 3 and has the best range in value and drawing details, the eye is able to pop out of the socket due to good range and the charcoal works well as the skin due to its texture and range of tonal value.

NOSE DRAWINGS FROM PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCE

About the piece

This is my attempt at drawing a realistic nose with different mediums such as graphite and charcoal. The attempt with graphite sees the most use of tone as there are highlights halftones and shadows while the others are mostly just highlights and shadows. Although the nose is all based on the same picture the most control came from the graphite while the medium that had the largest range of value was from the charcoal however it had the least control. The graphite had the most control and a good range of value so the nose was able to pop really well (pictures 2 and 3). All the noses are drawn in a monochromatic scheme of black and white as this makes it very easy to create depth due to the high contrast between the two. The texture of the graphite was really soft and sharp creating a nose that was blending really well and drawn well, while the oil pastel and charcoal both had rough textures and were also hard to draw with.

HAND DRAWINGS FROM PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCE

About Me: Text
About Me: My Work

The first picture is based on a secondary image that was given to the class to replicate. I choose these two hands as they seem to have a more interesting composition and shading to them. The most important part when drawing hands is making sure that the structures are shown properly either mostly through the shading or even in this case hatching. The hand on the left has light coming from the left side which creates a dark shadow on the palm in order to emphasize this I used charcoal as it can darker values than graphite. Also in order to create texture the lower wrist has cross-hatching as it creates a rough texture that has skin like qualities. The hand on the right has the light coming straight on and this creates less overall contrast as more of the hand is exposed to the light. This makes the hand have a lighter tonal range and also makes it more important to show structure through the drawing. The flow of the hatching in both hands flow the same direction as this makes it more appealing to the audience's eye and also is easier to control.

While the second-hand drawing comes from the primary source and was drawn using a fine black pen. The technique of cross-hatching has also been used to effectively create a rough texture that the skin has in order for the drawings to be more realistic. The value element of art is also used to define where the lightness and the darkness of the hand is. As seen in the second picture, the hands have some white-grey parts which mean that the light shines on there. On the other hand, as the area of the hand is darker, the less light shine on there causing different values to be interpreted.
